"Male cosmetic surgery procedures have certainly found wider acceptance," says Dr. Philip Godfrey, who sees large numbers of men seeking liposuction of the flanks ("love handles" ) and abdomen. "Ideal candidates are men who watch their weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle, but who are still unable to rid themselves of localized fat excess in the love handle and lower abdominal areas. These male, gender-specific deposits may be impossible to lose through non-surgical means."
Dr. Godfrey acknowledges that there has also been a greater awareness among men that gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) can be permanently remedied through minimally-invasive surgery. Whether treated by minimal incision techniques or by liposuction alone, gynecomastia can almost always be remedied without the need to leave a patient with large scars.

Both doctors hasten to point out that surgery, its side effects and risks are somewhat different in men than in women. "The anatomic differences exist at a finer level than one might suppose, requiring the surgeon to take into account both the gross and obvious differences in body shape as well as the tissue level anatomic differences that can affect the choice of surgical technique and the relative risk of various complications."
