Cosmetic Surgery New York: Breast Augmentation
Female breast volume enhancement has historically been one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgical procedures. Since the development of modern breast implants in 1962, millions of women have availed themselves of the opportunity to achieve fuller and more voluptuous breasts through surgery.
Although
surveys have shown that well over 90% of patients are still happy
with the decision for surgery many years afterward, breast augmentation
should always be considered carefully by each prospective patient.
As with any operation, there are side effects
that one must understand and accept, along with a small, but real
risk for complications.
Special attention should be given to the implant technologies available. The two broad categories of devices each employ a silicone elastomer outer shell, but differ with respect to the material used to fill the implant. "Saline" implants are filled with sterile salt water by the surgeon at the time of implantation. "Gel" implants come pre-filled with silicone gel (a silicone polymer with fewer "cross-links" than the elastomer of the shell). Each implant type has its own advantages and shortcomings, so a careful discussion between surgeon and patient will be needed to decide which is best chosen, (read more about breast implants).
In the past, (as well as in some quarters today), breast enlargements were allowed to follow the fancy of the patient, with little or no consideration given to restrictions placed upon the surgery by the patient's existing anatomy. This led to "over augmentation" for many women, resulting in distorted, unnatural shapes and excessive thinning of breast tissues. Much more natural results are achieved by taking into account the volume, distribution and distensibility of the existing breast tissue. When the patient's own body is thus used as a guide, the surgeon will more often achieve a result that is optimally aesthetic and that will retain acceptable contour and health over time.
Breast Augmentation: Learn More
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure used to enhance the fullness, prominence, and shape of the breasts. In this procedure, a small incision is made on or near each breast, and access is gained for placement of a breast implant beneath the breast itself or the underlying muscle. Consideration is given to several technical issues in the pre-operative discussions for implant surgery. Among these are the choice of incision, (beneath the breast, at the areolar edge or in the armpit), breast implant type, (smooth vs textured, round vs. "anatomic"), and implant location, (subglandular vs. submuscular). The patient's desires regarding shape and volume, her individual anatomy and her activities and lifestyle all play a role in the decision-making process about technique.
